For the Autumn, Winter and Spring courses lessons are held on Fridays and Saturdays. On Friday, the lessons are at 16.00, 17.00 and 18.00. On Saturday, lessons are at 09.00, 10.00 and 11.00. For the Summer Course, lessons are held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. During Summer, on Tuesday and Thursday, lessons are at 16.00 and 17.00. On Saturday, the lessons are at 9.00 and 10.00.
Our swimming lessons are structured for children 3 years upwards. We do not have any toddler lessons. At the age of 3, the attention span of the child improves drastically, and they will also start to follow instructions better. It is also important that the child is fully potty trained.

First and foremost, a swimming cap is compulsory for all classes. Students, will also need to use the appropriate swimwear. Goggles are required from the Turtles category upwards.  Noodles and boards will be provided by us. The child will also require flips-flops or crocs to walk on deck from the changing rooms.

At the MFA swimming pool, we sell all kinds of swimming accessories required. You can ask our pool attendant for assistance at the reception area.

We have a maximum of 5 children per instructor at the Guppies level, and 6 children per instructor for the all the other levels. Guppies classes have a maximum of 10 children with 2 instructors, while all other classes have a maximum of 12 children.

Our lessons are one hour long. This is the optimum length of time for focused learning and also for some extra fun time for young children.

Most of our instructors have completed the Level 1 Swimming course offered by the ASA and have also updated to Level 1 UK, which is the new system being introduced in Malta this year. Most of our instructors are also certified first Aiders. All our employees have been verified and have a clean police conduct. They have also been verified according to the POMA Act, and were found not to be listed in the child offender register.

Children are promoted to the next group providing they reach the required criteria which will be assessed by the coaches at the end of the course.  Assessments will only be issued with 70% attendance of the lessons.  In the cases where the student has not attended enough lessons to be assessed, a certificate of participation will be issued, but the child will not move up a level.  When the child has 70% attendance or more, you will receive a detailed assessment sheet indicating the score on all the criteria covered during the term, including the instructor’s feedback. The child will also be assessed on behaviour and attendance, and a completion certificate will be issued.  In order for your child to move up a level, he/she needs to have obtained good scores on all criteria, and the Head Coach agrees that the progression is beneficial to the child.

Progress may not always be continuous, it can come in stages, and children will occasionally plateau in their learning. We always aim to challenge children and continually push for progress when possible. However, sometimes, they may even appear to regress. It is not uncommon for some skills to take a while to master, particularly if the child is learning a new or difficult skill or combining multiple skills together. Being patient and trusting the process is important, but if there are specific concerns, they can be addressed with Sharon Zarb, our Head Coach and also our swimming School Co-ordinator. It is also important to remember that children are accomplishing something by maintaining their existing skills. Many younger children will regress if lessons and regular practice are not continuous or stop for more than a few weeks.

We believe that to swim well is an asset for life. In Malta, there is a big need to teach swimming to all kids. We are surrounded by the sea, and yet very few of us know how to swim properly. Pressure to perform is often the biggest roadblock to a swimmer’s progress. While our programme is designed to challenge children, we try to remove the pressure which can cause them to regress instead. Children who learned to relax in the water have an easier time grasping the concepts of the actual freestyle stroke. The emphasis in all the classes is on helping the child achieve the confidence necessary to perform the skills needed to be promoted to the next group level.

Be supportive, but avoid becoming a participant in the lesson. The instructor will need each swimmer to focus on the class.  Applaud your swimmer for a sincere effort, but beware of false praise.  Encourage your swimmer, but refrain from criticism.  Resist the urge to compare your child to other swimmers.  Ask the instructor which skills you can help with at home.

When you apply for our swimming school, there are a range of criteria descriptors to help you with your choice. It is important to place your child in the most appropriate level based on the information provided in our swimming school structure. If you have a doubt, book your child into a level that is definitely attainable based on their previous experiences so that they can be comfortable. If our coaches see that the child might be in the wrong class, we will do the necessary adjustments, and will upgrade or downgrade them according to their abilities. Remember, we place children according to ability not age.
There can be no refunds for any missed lessons. We understand that children are unwell or unforeseen circumstances arise which result in missed lessons. Given enough notice, we will try our best to offer a replacement lesson. Lessons missed by children during the term, can only be recovered during the same term and only if space is available due to other absent children. The safety ratios have to be adhered to at all times, and therefore thee cannot be any extra children in a full class.
